Reclaiming Energy: Letting Go of Worries About Things That May Never Happen

Worry is a strange creature. It sneaks in quietly, sits in our minds, and takes up precious energy we might not realize we’re expending until we're utterly drained. It promises us “security” or “preparation” for the unknown, but more often, it just robs us of today’s peace in the name of tomorrow’s uncertainties.

The Hidden Cost of Worry

Worry has a way of whispering that it’s necessary. It tells us that if we don’t think through every possible scenario—every “what if” and “just in case”—we’re somehow neglecting our responsibilities. But the truth is, constant worry drains our mind and body, raising stress levels and often leaving us mentally and emotionally exhausted. We waste so much time in “what could be” that we miss what actually is.

Science backs this up: chronic worry can actually increase cortisol, the stress hormone, which can contribute to fatigue, lower immunity, and even make it harder to think clearly or enjoy life. Our bodies are equipped to handle stress in short bursts, but chronic worry? It’s like running a marathon every day. We’re not meant to live that way.

Why We Tend to Worry About the Unknown

There’s a reason worry feels so natural. From an evolutionary perspective, our minds are designed to anticipate threats so we can prepare to survive. Our ancestors might have worried about predators or natural dangers; today, those instincts translate into anxieties about future events. But these days, most of what we worry about won’t actually happen.

Our minds struggle to differentiate between an actual threat and a hypothetical one. When we envision negative outcomes, our bodies respond as if they’re happening. So we end up living through scenarios we may never actually face.

Worry as a False Sense of Control

There’s also a part of us that believes that by worrying, we’re “doing” something productive. We think that if we obsess over potential problems, we’ll be better prepared. But worry rarely solves anything. In fact, it often prevents us from addressing the things we can control. We’re so busy worrying about everything that we end up doing nothing.

Letting go of worry doesn’t mean we’re ignoring life’s challenges; it means we’re acknowledging what’s beyond our control and choosing to focus on what we can influence. Accepting that we don’t know the future can be deeply freeing.

Mindfulness: A Tool to Bring You Back to the Present

One of the best ways to combat worry is to practice mindfulness. Mindfulness helps us notice when we’re getting lost in “what if” thoughts and gently brings us back to the here and now. It’s about recognizing that our thoughts aren’t the same as reality—they’re just thoughts. They come and go, like clouds, and we don’t have to believe or entertain every single one.

Simple mindfulness techniques, such as deep breathing, taking a walk in nature, or simply observing the present moment, can help us disengage from the mental loop of worry. These practices remind us that the present is where our true power lies.

Learning to Let Go of What We Can’t Control

Letting go is a gradual process, but it can start with simple steps. When you feel worry creeping in, pause and ask yourself, “Is this something I can control or influence?” If not, try to release it. You might even set aside a “worry time” each day—a few minutes where you allow yourself to think about your concerns, and then move on.

Another helpful strategy is cognitive reframing. This means actively questioning whether the things you’re worrying about are as likely or significant as they seem. Most of the time, we’ll realize that we’re inflating their importance or probability.

Replace Worry with Actionable Steps

Sometimes, worry serves as a signal for something that genuinely requires our attention. Instead of dwelling on the worry, use it as a prompt for actionable steps. For instance, if you’re worried about an upcoming project, ask yourself what small, manageable actions you can take today to prepare for it.

By channeling your energy into productive steps, you shift from helplessness to empowerment. This approach allows you to be proactive rather than reactive, creating a positive loop where you focus on what you can influence rather than what you can’t.

Choosing Presence Over Fear

Imagine if we could take back the energy we waste worrying about things that may never happen. What could we achieve with that energy? What relationships might we strengthen, what dreams might we pursue, what joy might we find in the ordinary moments of each day? When we choose to live fully in the present, we’re not ignoring the future—we’re just refusing to let it steal from today.

Each day we have a choice: to invest our energy in fears or to put it toward living with intention. It might take practice, but each small step toward letting go of worry opens us up to a richer, more grounded life.

Let today be the day you begin reclaiming your energy, bit by bit, worry by worry. Let it be the day you decide to live fully in the present, even in the smallest ways. The peace you find there is worth everything.
